Weather Forecasting Flashcards
Atmosphere
The air that surrounds the Earth
Weather
What is happening in the atmosphere at a certain place and time
Troposphere
The lowest layer of the atmosphere
Main factors of weather (6)
Temperature, air pressure, wind, humidity, precipitation, cloudiness
Meteorologists
Scientists who study the weather
Forecasts
Predictions about the weather
Air pressure
The force of the air that pushes down on the Earth
Barometer
An instrument that measures air pressure
Convection
Movement of energy by the rising and sinking of air
Wind vane
Instrument that shows the direction the wind is blowing
Anemometer
Instrument that measures wind speed
Water vapor
The gas form of water that is in the air
Humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air
Relative humidity
The amount of water vapor in the air compared to the greatest amount that could be in the air at that temperature and pressure
Precipitation
Any form of water falling from clouds to Earth
Rain gauge
Instrument that measures rainfall
Isobar
Wavy lines on a weather map that connect areas with the same air pressure.
Front
Boundary between 2 unlike air masses
Cold front
When a cold air mass moves into a warm air mass
(Causes short storms and colder weather - fastest moving
Warm front
When a warm air mass moves into a cold air mass
Steady precipitation lasting several days, then warmer weather
Stationary front
When air masses meet and stop moving
Tornadoes
Spinning, funnel-shaped clouds with very strong winds.
Climate
The average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time.
Greenhouse Effect
When gases in Earth’s atmosphere trap heat and keep the climate warm. (Some of this is necessary)
Global Warming
When too much of the greenhouse gases get in the atmosphere; will cause the Climate to get too warm.
Fujita Scale
Tornado scale used to classify tornadoes based on wind speed and amount of damage.
Climatologist
Scientist that studies the climate
Prevailing Winds
Winds that move over large parts of the Earth’s surface
Clouds (4)
Cumulus, cirrus, stratus, nimbus
Cumulus Clouds
Big, puffy, fair-weather clouds
Cirrus Clouds
Thin, wispy, (can signal a storm 12-24 hrs.)
Stratus Clouds
Form layers; usually bring light rain
Nimbus Clouds
Dark clouds
