Weather & Climate Flashcards
What is weather?
Weather is the day to day condition of the atmosphere. It includes temperature, precipitation (rain & snow) and wind direction, wind speed, humidity, clouds & air pressure.
The weather describes the conditions of the atmosphere at a particular time.
What is climate?
The climate of a place is its average weather taken over many years (usually 30 years).
Climate is the seasonal changes in temperature and rainfall over a year.
List the factors affecting weather/climate.
Factors affecting climate are
- latitude
- distance from the sea
- prevailing winds
- altitude
- Ocean currents
What is atmosphere?
Atmosphere is the layer of air around earth
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is water falling from the atmosphere to Earth’s surface (e.g. rain and snow).
Explain air pressure
Air pressure is an important weather element. When warm air rises, the air pressure is reduced and when the cold air sinks, the air pressure is increased.
What causes wind?
The movement of air from areas of high pressure to areas of low pressure causes the wind.
Explain humidity
Humidity is the amount of moisture in the air
Explain solar energy in relation to equator
Solar energy is strongest near the equator and weakest near the north and south poles.
Explain prevailing wind
Prevailing wind is the usual direction of the wind in a place
How does latitude affect weather?
The further you go from the equator the colder it gets
How does altitude affect weather?
Locations at a higher altitude have colder temperatures
How does distance from the sea affect weather?
Places that are a long way from the sea have a continental climate, with cold snowy winters and hot, dry summers. The sea can moderate temperatures.
How does prevailing wind affect weather?
Winds that blow from the sea often bring rain to the coast and dry weather to inland areas.Winds that blow from inland areas can be warm, cold and dry.
How do ocean currents affect weather?
Ocean currents can increase or decrease temperatures.
