Weather & Climate Flashcards
1
Q
Weather
A
- Atmospheric conditions (temp, precipitation, wind, humidity) in a particular location over a SHORT period of time.
- To predict the weather meteorologists gather info around the world (weather station, weather balloons, satellites).
2
Q
Climate
A
- It is the usual pattern of weather in a region over a LONG period of time.
- Climatologists collect weather data over 30+ years so that they can average the results
- Using climate data you can get “expected” weather.
3
Q
Factors that affect climate
A
- The distance from the equator (latitude)
- The presence of large bodies of water
- The presence of ocean/air currents
- Land formations
- Height above seal level (altitude)
4
Q
Ecoregions
A
- Ecoregions are based on landforms, soil, plants, animals, and climate.
- They look at human factors (crops, urban centres)
5
Q
How is the Planet changing Globally?
A
- Increasing sea levels
- More frequent, stronger hurricanes
- Increased salinization
- Drought and flood
- Coastal soil erosion
- Ocean acidification
- Global mean temperature is increasing
