Climate

A

Usual pattern of weather over a long period of time. Using climate data you can get expected weather.

Q

Ozone

A

It’s O3. It has a sharp, strong order. It is highly reactive.

Two kinds of ozone’s:
1. Good ozone, it prevents most of the dangerous UV rays from the sun. It’s in the stratosphere.

  1. Bad ozone. This is in the troposphere (where we live). It has toxic effects. Bad ozone is a major contributor to smog and air pollution.

Q

Carbon “sink”

A

Forest, ocean, or other natural environments viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

9
Q

CO2

A

Can stay in the atmosphere for 100’s of years (reservoir). Plants take the carbon out of the atmosphere.

Q

Effects of Climate Change

A
  1. Loss of sea ice (glaciers etc.)
  2. Accelerated sea level rise.
  3. More intense heat waves.
  4. Forest fires.
  5. Threatens health through increased diseases, freshwater shortages, and increased smog.

20
Q

Mountain Pine Beetle

A

Is a species of bark beetle native to the forests of western North America from Mexico to central British Columbia.

21
Q

Chlorofluorocarbons

A

Any of the simple gas compounds that contain carbon, chlorine, fluorine, and sometimes hydrogen, that are used as refrigerants, cleaning solvents, and aerosol propellants. Are believed to be a major cause of stratospheric ozone depletion.

22
Q

Ice Core

A

Is a core sample that is typically removed from an ice sheet or a high mountain glacier. They can reach depths of over two miles (3.2 km), and contain ice up to 800,000 years old.

23
Q

Feedback Loop

A

In a climate change, a feedback loop is the equivalent of a vicious or virtuous circle. Something that accelerates or decelerates a warming trend.

Positive feedback loop:
Accelerates temperature rise.

Negative feedback loop:
Decelerates temperature rise.

24
Q

Greenhouse Gas Effect

A

The atmosphere of a plant traps radiation emitted by it’s sun, caused by gases such as carbon dioxide, water vapour, and methane. The heat is radiated back from the plants surface.

26
Q

Thermal Expansion of Water

A

The tendency of matter to change in shape area and volume in response to temperature change in climate.

27
Q

Greenhouse Gases

A

A gas that Contributes to the greenhouse effect by absorbing infrared radiation.
