Weather And Climate Flashcards
Weather
Atmospheric conditions (temperature, precipitation, wind, humidity etc.) in a particular location over a short period of time.
Climate
Usual pattern of weather over a long period of time. Using climate data you can get expected weather.
Temperature
The degree or intensity of heat present in a substance or an object.
Ozone
It’s O3. It has a sharp, strong order. It is highly reactive.
Two kinds of ozone’s:
1. Good ozone, it prevents most of the dangerous UV rays from the sun. It’s in the stratosphere.
- Bad ozone. This is in the troposphere (where we live). It has toxic effects. Bad ozone is a major contributor to smog and air pollution.
Altitude
The height of an object or point in relation to sea level or ground level.
Latitude
The angular distance of a place north or south of the earth’s equator, usually expressed in degrees and minutes.
Fossil Fuels
A natural fuel, like coal, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms.
Anthropogenic CO2
The amount of CO2 caused by humans.
Carbon “sink”
Forest, ocean, or other natural environments viewed in terms of its ability to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
CO2
Can stay in the atmosphere for 100’s of years (reservoir). Plants take the carbon out of the atmosphere.
Carbon “footprint”
The amount of carbon dioxide and other carbon compounds emitted due to the consumption of fossil fuels by a particular person, group, etc.
Nitrous Oxide (NO2)
A colourless gas with a sweetish oder, prepared by hearting ammonium nitrate. It can be an aerosol propellant.
Methane (CH4)
Methane is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CH4, is the main constituent of natural gas.
Proxy Records
Records that are indirectly inferred, rather than actually measured.
Effects of Climate Change
- Loss of sea ice (glaciers etc.)
- Accelerated sea level rise.
- More intense heat waves.
- Forest fires.
- Threatens health through increased diseases, freshwater shortages, and increased smog.
