Weather And Climate Flashcards
What is weather?
Weather is the day to day changes in the atmosphere.
What might weather include?
Weather might include temperature, precipitation, humidity, cloud cover, sunshine, air pressure, wind direction and wind speed.
What is climate?
Climate is the average weather, usually based over 30 years. Talks about warm dry summers, cold dark winters and hot and dry all year round.
What is an anemometer?
An anemometer has metal cups that rotate in the wind. The stronger the wind, the faster the cups turn.

What is a Rain Gauge?
A rain gauge is a clear funnel where water flows into the cup to be measured.
What is a Thermometer?
A thermometer measures the temperature of something
A thermometer measures in the shade so the sun’s rays do not heat the instruments being used. The thermometer contains liquid (mercury or spirit) in the bulb.
It expands as it gets warm, rising up the tube.
Give the definition of atmosphere.
Atmosphere is the ‘envelope of gases surrounding the earth.
Give the six different layers of the atmosphere. (Start from the closest to the earth).
- Troposphere
- Stratosphere
- Ozone Layer
- Mesosphere
- Thermosphere/lonosphere
- Exosphere
What is the atmosphere made up of?
78% Nitrogene
21% Oxygen
1% Argon, Carbon dioxide and other gases
What is vapour?
Vapour is water droplets held in the air.
What is precipitation?
Precipitation is another name for rainfall.
What does ‘Polar’ mean?
Cold
What does ‘Tropical’ mean?
Warm/Hot
What does ‘Maritine’ mean?
Wet
