Weather and Climate Flashcards
Air Pressure
the force that air puts on an area (related word: pressure)
Barometer
The instrument that measures air pressure in the atmosphere
Cirrus Cloud
Feathery clouds that form in high the altitudes
Climate
The Characteristic weather condition in an area for a long period of time
Cloud
A visible mass of condense water vapor floating in the atmosphere typically high above the ground
Drought
A deficiency in precipitation over an extended period usually a season or more, resulting in water shortage causing adverse impacts on vegetation, animals, and/or people.
Cumulonimbus cloud
A dense, towering, vertical cloud associated with thunderstorms and atmospheric instability forming from water vapor carried by powerful upward air currents
Cumulus cloud
large, fluffy, white clouds, often seen in fair skies; can develop into cumulonimbus clouds
Puffy clouds that look like pieces of floating cotton
Front
in weather, the boundary between two masses of air with different properties
The boundary between two dissimilar air masses
Humidity
A quantity representing the amount water vapor in the atmosphere
Hurricane
A tropical cyclone with winds of 74 mph or greater usually accompanied by rain, thunder, and lightning.
Meteorology
Branch of science concerned with the process and phenomenon of the atmosphere especially as means of forecasting the weather
