Weather and Climate Flashcards
What is weather?
Day to day changes in the atmosphere at a given time and place - variables measured are temperature, precipitation, wind speed/direction, cloud cover and air pressure.
What is climate?
Long term weather pattern of an area (total of average weather conditions recorded over 30 years)- variables measured are temperature, precipitation and wind.
What is used to measured sunlight?
Campbell-Stokes sunshine recorder
What measuring units is sunlight measured in?
Sunlight hours
What is used to measure rain?
Rain gauge
What measuring units is rain measured in?
Millimetres (mm)
What is used to measure wind speed?
Anemometer
What measuring units is wind speed measured in?
miles per hour (mph) or kilometres per hour (kph)
What is used to measure air pressure?
Barometer
What units are used to measure air pressure?
Millibars
Put the following in order from closest to farthest:
Exosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere, thermosphere, troposphere
Troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, exosphere
What are the five air masses affecting the UK?
Tropical continental, tropical maritime, polar continental, polar maritime, arctic maritime
What is the prevailing wind of the UK?
South-west
What is condensation nuclei?
Microscopic particles of dust, smoke or salt in the atmosphere on which water vapour condenses to form cloud droplets.
Name three different types of cloud.
Cumulonimbus, altocumulus, cumulus, cirrocumulus, altostratus, stratocumulus, stratus, cirrostratus, cirrus, nimbostratus
