Weather and Climate Flashcards
What is Weather?
Short-term changes in the atmosphere
What is Climate?
Describes weather trends over long periods of time
What is high pressure?
Air that is more dense. Molecules are close together. Want to move to a low pressure area.
What is low pressure?
Air that is less dense. Molecules are father apart.
What is the Coriolis Effect?
The rotation of the Earth causes the wind to a appear to curve.
What is a circulation?
Water and air moving in a circular pattern.
What is salinity
The amount of salt in something.
Rain shadow
A dry region on the leeward side of a mountain area, where less precipitation falls compared to the windward side.
Climate zone
Areas with distinct climates that can be defined by weather pattern, latitude, or plant and animal communities.
altitude
The height and object is over ground (or sea) level.
precipitation
Part of the weather cycle, when water falls to the Earth as hail, rain, snow or sleet.
Wind
The movement of the air due to uneven heating of the Earth’s surface.
Latitude
The horizontal lines on a map or globe. It measures the amount north or south from the equator a location is.
