Weather and Climate Flashcards
What is Climate?
Describes weather trends over long periods of time
What is Weather?
Short term changes in the atmosphere
What is High Pressure?
Air that is more dense. Molecules that are close together and want to move to a low pressure area
What is Low Pressure?
Air that is less dense. Molecules that are farther apart.
What is the Coriolis Effect?
When the Earth’s rotation causes the wind to curve around.
What is Circulation?
The ocean and air rotation; rotating in a circle.
What is Salinity?
The amount of salt something has in it ( mostly liquids )
What is rain shadow?
A rain shadow is the dry side of a mountain
What are Climate zones?
Areas with distinct climates that can be defined by weather patterns, latitude, or plant and animal communities
What is altitude?
The height and object is above ground (or sea) level
What is latitude?
The horizontal lines on a map or globe it measures the amount north to south from the equator or a location is
What is wind?
The movement of air due to uneven heating of the Earth’s surface
What is precipitation?
Part of the water cycle, when water falls to the Earth as hail, snow, rain or sleet
