Weather And Climate Flashcards
Air pressure
the force exerted by air, whether compressed or unconfined, on any surface in contact with it.
Tropical
of, typical of, or peculiar to the tropics.
Celsius
of or denoting a scale of temperature on which water freezes at 0° and boils at 100° under standard conditions.
Cumulus cloud
bulbous or billowing white or dark grey cloud associated with rising air currents.
Cirrus cloud
a wispy white cloud (usually of fine ice crystals) at a high altitude .
Thermometer
an instrument for measuring and indicating temperature, typically one consisting of a narrow, hermetically sealed glass tube marked with graduations and having at one end a bulb containing mercury or alcohol that expands and contracts in the tube with heating and cooling.
Tropical depression
an atmospheric low-pressure system originating in the tropics.
Ocean current
the steady flow of surface ocean water in a prevailing direction.
Dew point
the atmospheric temperature (varying according to pressure and humidity) below which water droplets begin to condense and dew can form.
Hurricane
a storm with a violent wind, in particular a tropical cyclone in the Caribbean.
Desert
A dry, often sandy region of little rainfall, extreme temperatures, and sparse vegetation.
Typhoon
a tropical storm in the region of the Indian or western Pacific oceans.
Humidity
a quantity representing the amount of water vapor in the atmosphere or in a gas.
Forecast
predict or estimate (a future event or trend).
Atmosphere
the envelope of gases surrounding the earth or another planet.
Hail
pellets of frozen rain which fall in showers from cumulonimbus clouds.
“rain and hail bounced on the tiled roof”
Thunder storm
rain-bearing cloud that also produces lightning.
Cloud
a visible collection of particles of water or ice suspended in the air, usually at an elevation above the earth’s surface.
Precipitation
the process of precipitating or of forming a precipitate.
Drought
a prolonged period of abnormally low rainfall, leading to a shortage of water.
Front
to face or be next to something.
Meteorology
a science that deals with the atmosphere and its phenomena and especially with weather and weather forecasting.
Freezing point
temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid.
Tornado
A violently rotating column of air touching the ground.
Cumulonimbus cloud
a cloud of a class indicative of thunderstorm conditions.
Thunder
the sound that follows a flash of lightning.
Weather
the state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat.
Waterspout
a pipe for carrying off water from a roof.
Barometer
an instrument for determining the pressure of the atmosphere .
Global warming
Global warming occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) and other air pollutants collect in the atmosphere and absorb sunlight and solar radiation.
Temperature
measure of hotness or coldness expressed in terms of any of several arbitrary scales and indicating the direction
Barometric pressure
force per unit area exerted by an atmospheric column
Funnel cloud
a funnel-shaped cloud that projects from the base of a thundercloud
Climate
a region of the earth having specified climatic conditions.
