Weather Flashcards
How does a weather man know when it’s going to rain? He measures the air pressure using a barometer. When the barometer shows low air pressure, the weather man knows that bad weather is on its way.
Barometer
Think of the layers of gases in the atmosphere like blankets on top of your bed. The more blankets, the heavier they are. Gases in the atmosphere lay on top of the Earth pushing down like blankets. This “push” is called barometric pressure.

You can predict the weather by looking at the clouds in the sky. Some clouds are formed high up and look like feathers. They are called cirrus clouds. Cirrus clouds are white and made up of ice crystals. Sometimes they may be a sign that a change in the weather is coming.
Cirrus cloud
Weather over time
Climate
a collection of water droplets or ice crystals in the atmosphere
Cloud
prolonged shortage of rainfall
Drought
the temperature at which water vapor in the air condenses into water
Dew point
anvil-shaped cloud that is often involved in heavy or violent storms: Cumulonimbus clouds are also called thunderheads. (related words: cumulus, nimbus)
Cumulonimbus cloud
large, fluffy, white clouds, often seen in fair skies; can develop into cumulonimbus clouds
Cumulus clouds
(v) to analyze weather data and make an educated guess about weather in the future; (n) a prediction about what the weather will be like in the future based on weather data
Forecast
in weather, the boundary between two masses of air with different properties
Front
a rotating, funnel-shaped cloud: Funnel clouds do not touch the ground.
Funnel cloud
small, icy balls that fall from the sky
Hail
the measure of how much water vapor is in the air
Humanity
a storm with strong winds and rain that forms over tropical waters (related term: typhoon, tropical cyclone)
Hurricane
