Weather Flashcards
What are air masses?
Air masses are large bodies of air, sharing similar temperature moisture and atmospheric pressure.
Where do fronts occur?
Where two different air masses meet.
What is a weather map?
Internationally agreed standards and symbols.
What is a synoptic chart?
Summarises atmospheric condition such as temperature , perception and wind speed.
What is a occluded front?
The point where a cold front overtakes a war front or vice versa. Occluded fronts being changeable weather.
What is a depression?
Areas of low atmospheric pressure. Which produce colours , rainy and windy weather.
What is a warm front?
Where warm air rises over a mass of cold air. The warm air cools and expands and clouds form.
What is an isobar?
Lines on a weather map that join up places of equal atmospheric pressure. The closer together isobars are the windier it is.
What is a cold front?
Transition zone where a cold air mass replaces a warm one. The cold gradually moves beneath the warm air. It will rain heavily as the warm air is pushed upwards.
What is an anticyclone?
The opposite of depression, they are areas of high atmospheric pressure where the air is sinking.
What is a weather front?
The area where two air masses with different temperatures and densities collide, but do not mix.
What are the three types of rainfall?
Relief rainfall
Frontal rainfall
Conventional rainfall
What weather does high pressure bring?
Warm and sunny weather.
What weather does low pressure bring?
Cold , rain and thunderstorms.
What weather do occluded fronts bring?
Changeable weather conditions.
