Drought
A long period when there is little or no rain.
Ex: A severe drought has caused to ruin most of the wheat crops in California.
Ex: a drought is to blame for the lack of rainfall in many constant years.
Avalanche
A large mass of snow, ice, and rocks that falls down the side of a mountain.
Hailstorm
A storm when a lot of hail falls
Tsunami
An extremely large wave caused by violent movement of the earth under the sea
Volcanic eruption
An occasion when a volcano explodes, and flames and rocks come out of it
Wildfire
A fire that is burning strongly and out of control on an area of grass
Summit
Mountain peak
Cliff
A high area of rock with a very steep side
Meadow
A field with wild grass and flowers
Ex: There is a path through the meadow to the village
Crater
A round hole at the top of a volcano
Plain
A large area of flat dry land
Mountain ridge
A long area of high land at the top of a mountain
Plateau
A large area of flat land that is higher than the land around it
Puddle
A small pool of liquid on the ground from rain
Pond
An area of water smaller than a lake that is either natural or artificially made
The eye of the hurricane
The eye of a storm is roughly circular area
Richter scale
The richter scale measures the intensity of an earthquake
Fault lines
Fault lines are to blame for earthquakes
Magnitude
The large size
Ex: they don’t seem to grasp the magnitude of the problem
Aftershock
Suddenly movement of the earth’s surface
Ex: if you are feeling aftershock, you have just survived a strong earthquake
Casualty
A person injured in a serious accident
Ex: the train was derailed but there were no casualties
Crust
A hard outer covering of something
Ex: earthquakes are a result of the movement of ‘plates’ in the earth’s crust
Play Havoc
(Cause) Confusion or lack of order
Ex: natural disasters play havoc and wreck lives
Forest ranger
A person whose job is to protect a forest
Ex: forest rangers are constantly on guard for the first sign of a widfire
Evacuate
To move people from a dangerous place to somewhere safe
Ex: Several families were evacuated to British
Stream
Small river
Ex: the stream was quite shallow so we were able to walk across it.
Marsh (or swamp)
Very wet, soft land
Ex: the Everglades is a large region of marsh land in Florida
Glacier
A large mass of ice that moves slowly
Gulf
A very large area of sea surrounded on three sides by a coast
Ex: warships are heading towards the gulf of Mexico
Strait
A narrow area of sea that connects two larger areas of sea.
Ex: the strait lies between the Atlantic ocean and the mediterranean sea
Inlet
A narrow channel of water that goes from a sea or lake into the land
Blizzard
/‘blizrd/
A sever snow storm with strong wind
- a raging blizzard
Ex: sever weather such as blizzard, hurricanes, flash flood can cause serious damage and the loss of life
Ex: A raging blizzard paralyzed the entire traffic of the city
Bizarre
very strange and unusuall
Ex: some of mother Nature’s forces are so bizarre and expected
- a bizarre situation
Freaky or freakish
Very unusual or unexpected in unpleasant or strange way
Ex: freaky forces of Nature
Sweep
To move especially quickly and powerfully
Ex: a tornado with wind speeds of 110km an hour can sweep away entire houses
Derail
To make a train come off the railway tracks
Ex: a tornado with wind speeds of more than 400km an hour has power to derail trains
Tear
To pull apart
Ex: a tornado tears grass from the ground
Pavement
A path with a hard surface on side of a road that people walk on
Ex: keep to the pavement, there’s good girl
Come off
- To fall from something
Ex: a little boy has just fell his bicycle -
Come off well
Ex: I though you came off well in a contest
