Weather Flashcards
(38 cards)
Weather
The short term state of the atmosphere, including temperature, humidity, precipitation, wind, and visibility
Humidity
the amount of water vapor in the air
relative humidity
The ratio of the amount of water vapor in the air to the maximum amount of water vapor the air can hold at a set temperature
Condensation
The change of state from a gas to a liquid
dew point
The temperature at which a gas condenses into a liquid
psychrometer
An instrument that is used to measure relative humidity
cloud
a collection of small water droplets or ice crystals suspended in the air, which forms when the air is cooled and condensation occurs
cumulus Clouds
Puffy, white clouds that tend to have flat bottoms
cumulonimbus cloud
Thunderstorms come from this kind of cumulus clouds
stratus clouds
clouds that form in layers
Nimbostratus
are dark stratus clouds that usually produce light to heavy continuous
cirrus Clouds
Thin, feathery, white clouds found at high altitudes
cirrocumulus cloud
A cumulus cloud that forms high in the atmosphere
Middle clouds
made up of both water drops and ice crystals
Low clouds
made up of water drops
HIgh Clouds
Made up of ice crystals
Precipitation
any form of water that falls to the earth’s surface from the clouds
rain
moisture condensed from the atmosphere that falls visibly in separate drops
Sleet
forms when rain falls through layer of freezing air
Snow
when temperatures are so cold that water vapor changes directly into a solid
Hail
Balls or lumps of ice that falls from clouds
air mass
large body of air where temperature and moisture content are constant throughout
front
the boundary between air masses of different densities and usually different temperatures
cyclones
an area in the atmosphere that has lower pressure than the surrounding area and has winds that spiral toward the center
