Weapons Flashcards
Define Ordnance
Weapon on an Aircraft / in firing thing ready to fire the munition.
E.g. Bomb attached to aircraft or round in magazine in Weapon system
Define Munition
Equipment forming a complete device E.g. Missile/Shell/mine
Define Explosives
Substance which is capable by chemical reaction of causing an explosion
What are the three uses of explosives?
Offensive: bombs/missiles
Defensive: Chaff/ flares
Constructive: Ejection seats/ Flare rockets
Classifications of Explosives?
Low Explosive (BROWN): Pyrotechnics & propellants High Explosive (Yellow): - Primary: Detonators - Secondary: Main chargers/ boosters & primers
Give examples of In-service weapons & classes.
Air-to-ground: Paveway
Air-to-Air: ASRAAM
Guns: M134 minigun
Countermeasures: Flares
Explain Aircraft Armament Systems (AAS)
Broken into 3 sections:
AC Arm Suspension Equipment (AASE) (Wpns trade)
- ERU(Ejector Release Unit)
- HiPPAG (High pressure pure air generator)
- Pylons
Ac Arm Electrical Installation (AAEI) (AV trade)
- Wiring
- Circuits
Ac Role Change Harness
- Cable connects AAEI –> AASE –> Weapon
What kind of roles do Arm Eng Officer’s Have?
What is explained on a Hazard Classification Label/HCC?
UN Classification. I.e. Explosives or chemicals etc (1 is explosive)
Hazard Division: what kind of explosive is it, how big a boom.
Compatibility Group: “what it plays well with” for storage
What are the important colour markings on explosives (>25mm)?
Black: anti-armour Yellow: High Explosive Brown: Low Explosive (Rocket motors) Grey: Riot Control Light blue: Practice (Deep saxe blue) Dark blue: drill (Oxford blue) Red: Incendiary Green: Screening/Marking
What is marked on Ammunition storage? (Think ammo crates)
ADAC: Ammunition Descriptive Asset Code
HCC: Hazard Classification Label?
UN No.
BKI. Batch key indicator (manufacture date)
Define the Roles & Responsibilities of ArmO
Could be HoEs nominated person to ensure QR66: - Explosive safety - Bomb dump - Ranges Manage KANBAN & MEE Normal R&R of flt cmdr - Mangage & develop - Shifts - Welfare
Explain KANBAN
local state of readiness, how much equipment the bay may have serviced ready to be issued should the platform experience a surge period. Helps target the maintenance to prevent over maintaining and aid in focusing maintenance priorities.
Explain MEE
Senior Mission Essential Equipment – assets that would limit operational capabilities. Air Cmd have a vested interest in the amount of equipment available to meet operational requirements. Data from the bay inputted into high level meetings. Could highlight areas of risk or requires spending to ensure asset availability.
What bomb dump checks are there?
Monthly “Pes-checks”
Quarterly by the ESR
Annual ESIT
Explosive Chain
Input -> Safe/Arm Device -> Detonator -> Booster -> Main Charge

Markings on ammo?
ADAC (Ammo description Asset code) HCC (Hazard Classification Code) Nomenclature Batch Key Indicator UN No Manufacture Date Quantity
Anything in yellow will indicate explosive data
Everything else in white.
How do we licence explosive sites.
Licenses will be accepted when the areas:
Conform to recognised standards
Security in place
Fire service(s) aware and happy - HoE has acceped fire risk
Effective SMS
Suitable and competent organisation to manage the SMS
Appropriate quantity Distances
Why do we licence Explosives?
Preventing Fire & Explosion
Limiting damage from F&E
Protecting people
Preventing un-Authed Access
AAES Sequence?
SEAT PAN FIRING HANDLE triggers
Seat Sequencing Manifold: NVG, Commend Eject controller (canopy rockets), Harness retraction
BTDFU. 0.31 sec rear seat, 0.75 forward seat.
Primary Cartridge Fired. Top Latch Assembly, Miniature Det Cord (Canopy back-up), Emergency O2, PEC, Remote Rocket Initiator, Arm & leg restraints, Drogue and Barostatic
Secondary Cart(s)
2.21s seat clear and hanging.
Talk to me about Arm Incident Reporting
Report to MID Cell (Munitions Incident Database)
Accident Near-miss Weapons perform Unusually - Irregular release - failure to release - Inadvertent release - Irregular
FINISH ME
ESR?
Explosive Safety Representative
- Ensure explosive safety for the HoE
- Report any faults to them
- Maintain the PES map
- Attend siting meetings
- Staff competence
- Manage contractors
- Safe systems of work
- Examine PES logbooks
HERO?
Hazards of ElectroMagnetic Radiation to Ordnance
3 factors for making an ALARP explosive siting decision?
Minimum quantity of Explosives
Minimum no of people
Minimum amount of exposure time
Talk to me about the lifing of Explosives
