before the industrial revolution, Britain had already become wealthy from trade, particularly the Trans-Atlantic slave trade
how the slave trade made Britain wealthy
*slaves were captured and traded in West Africa
* they were taken across the Atlantic Ocean to America to work on cotton, tobacco, rice and sugar plantations
* the produce from these plantations was shipped to Britain. in Britain, raw materials were made into goods that were taken to and sold in West Africa and other parts of the world
Bristol and the slave trade
for about 100 years, from the beginning of the 18th century until slave trading was stopped in 1807, Bristol was an important seaport for the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. companies from the city sent ships to capture slaves in West Africa. many slaves died on the ships on their way to America because of the harsh conditions on the ships.
Bristol’s ships in the slave trade
ships brought raw cotton and sugar from America back to Bristol. from Bristol a variety of goods like woven cotton cloth, and other goods made in Britain were taken to sell in Europe, America and West Africa.
