Buddhist attitudes towards wealth

A
  • For Buddhists, what matters is not how wealthy someone is but how they got their money, their attitude towards it, and what they do with it.
  • Traditionally, monks and nuns live a simple life with little or no money.
  • Letting go of wealth is a way of overcoming attachment, which is a spiritual obstacle.
  • Ordinary Buddhists need to earn their livelihood but at the same time follow the ethical precepts.
  • The Buddha taught that happiness is not achieved through craving and accumulating wealth but through enlightenment.
  • ‘By action, knowledge and Dhamma, by virtue and noble way of life –By these are mortals purified, not by lineage or wealth.’ (The Buddha in the Majjhima Nikaya, vol. 3, p. 262)

2. To keep themselves safe
3. To give offerings to monks, nuns, or the poor
