Weaknesses in Kant's theory Flashcards
How is Kant’s theory seen as teleological?
The summon bonum acts as a goal
He asks us to work towards a kingdom of ends and asks us to be an outstanding moral citizen within it
Why is it difficult to see the best in others- seen as a fault?
Difficult as it’s dangerous for example axe murderer
Explain how the summon bonum is unrealistic
To know about the summon bonum but not treat it as a goal
Kingdom of ends is unreachable?
Will always be an ideal rather than a reality. This is because everyone develops moral reasoning at different paces of not at all? Therefore there will always be a individual developing
Absolutism
Sometimes consequences can be so severed would think it would better to break that rule than to let that happen.
Inflexible- Kant’s rules sometimes don’t fix the situation
Difficultly forming maxims
Nazi asks if you have Jews hiding in your house- if your maxim “do not tell lies” or “do. Or expose others to violence”
What is the problem with a priori
We need experience to work out what is right? Modern medical ethics
Every situation is unique
Is t helpful in the real world as every sis titian is different. Morality should be relevastist not absolutist
How is intrinsic worth problematic
Not everyone appears to have moral reasoning suggesting not everyone has intrinsic worth
