weakness of the league (pre-WW2) Flashcards
failure of disarmament
The league did not have much success in disarmament, rather it was the individual major European powers who bypassed the league
- failure: meant that powerful countries had the military capabilities for war, but also nothing was stopping one another from engaging in conflicts
Washington Naval Conference (slay)
Organised by USA(outside of the league)
negotiated for the ratio of capital ships outside the league 5(br): 5(fr): 3(jap)
Geneva World Disarmament Conference (unslay)
- Germany demanded the same level of armament as the other countries
- fr refused to limit their military
- UK and USA refused to commit the same amt as fr
- HITLER WITHDREW FROM THE CONFERENCE AND LON
usa influence
the usa commanded much more respect of the nations in the league rather than the league itself
br and fr??
both countries could also exercise the will of the league, however, their economies were greatly affected by WW1 and the GD, which meant that they placed their own national interests first rather than that of the League. No meaningful progress towards disarmament could be made as br and fr refused to compromise and reduce their armed forces
- led to the league’s inability to work towards disarmament and they lacked trust in each other, hence building up tension which later leads to the start of WW2
