Q

What is an FMRI?

A

An FMRI is a brain scanning technique which uses a magnetic field and radio signals to monitor blood flow and levels of haemoglobin within the brain to produce a dynamic image of brain activity.

Q

How accurate is it?

A

It is accurate of 1-2mm in the brain and shows activity roughly one second after it occurs.

Q

Who performed research on FMRI’S?

A

Beevers et al (2010) Found, using FMRI scans that individuals with depression often have difficulty in activating brain areas associated with cognitive control of emotional information

Q

What does his research illustrate?

A

This research showcases the value of FMRI scanning in achieving a greater understanding of the mental disorders, which may lead to more effective treatment and in turn improve societies economically, as individuals who are provided treatment will be able to cope with such symptoms and enter the workforce

Q

What are strengths of an FMRI?

A

An FMRI provides a moving picture of brain activity, this means that patterns of activity can be compared rather than just the physiology of the brain. The dynamic nature of the brain is important and so the FMRI is particularly useful for this

Q

A weakness of an FMRI?

A

The complexity of brain activity means that interpreting an FMRI scan is made difficult, this is made even more difficult by the 1 second delay of the scan

Q

Another weakness?

A

FMRI machines are expensive to buy and maintain, they also require trained operators, this can be particularly problematic given the financial strain already placed on the NHS and staff and means research will also be of greater Economic cost
