Q

Dealing with informed consent

A

Px’s should be issued with a consent letter detailing all relevant information that might affect their decision to participate. Assuming px agrees, this is signed. If px is a child under 16, this is signed by a parent.
Other ways of getting informed consent include: presumptive consent, prior general consent, retrospective consent.

Q

Dealing with deception and protection from harm

A

At the end of the study, px’s should be given a full debrief. Within this, px’s should be made aware of: true aims, any details they weren’t supplied with during the study. Px’s should be told what their data will be used for and must be given right to withdraw during the study and right to withhold their data. Px’s should be reassured their behaviour was typical or normal.

Q

Dealing with confidentiality

A

If personal details are held, they must be protected. It’s more usual to record no personal details i.e. maintain anonymity. Researchers often refer to px’s using numbers or initials when writing up investigation. In a case study, psychologists often use initials when describing individuals involved. It’s standard practice during briefing and debriefing that px’s are reminded their data will be protected throughout the process.
