waves & wave properties Flashcards
what are the two types of waves
transverse & longitudinal waves
what are transverse waves?
in transverse waves the movement of the waves is perpendicular to the energy flow
what are longitudinal waves ?
in a longitudinal wave the movement of the wave is parallel to the energy flow
what is the frequency of a wave?
the number of waves passing through a fixed point per second.
what is the amplitude of a wave?
the distance between the midpoint and the highest point on the wave
what is the wavelength of a wave?
the wavelength is the distance between two identical points on the wave
what the the time period of a wave?
time period is the time for one wave
what are wavelengths measured in
meters
what is frequency measured in?
hertz
what is time period measured in?
seconds
what do sound waves travel as?
longitudinal waves
what does sound need to travel?
particles to travel, they move the quickest in solids
what is a reflective sound known as?
an echo
how is wave speed , frequency and wavelength linked?
wave speed =frequency x wavelength
