Waves Vocabulary Flashcards
Frequency
The number of waves per second
Crest
The highest part of a wave
Wave
Something that moves energy from one place to another
Wavelength
The distance between two waves (crest to crest, trough to trough)
Energy
The ability to do work
Mechanical Waves
Waves that need a medium to travel through
Medium
A substance a wave travels through
Electromagnetic Waves
Waves that do not require a medium to travel through
Trough
The lowest part of a wave
Transverse Waves
Causes the medium to move perpendicular (up and down)
Amplitude
The height of a wave from the resting point (middle line) to the top. The more energy means more amplitude
Longitudinal Waves
Causes the medium to move parallel to the wave (forward and backward)
Rest Position
The midline of the wave. If there was not a wave, the medium would be flat at the rest position.
