Waves Sound And Light Flashcards
What is a pulse
A single disturbance in a medium
What is a transverse pulse
A pulse in which the particles of the medium move at right angles to the direction of motion of the Pulse
What is amplitude
Amplitude is the maximum displayment of a particle from its rest (equilibrium) position
What is the principle of superposition
This is the algebraic sum of the amplitudes of two pulses that occupy the same space at the same time
What is constructive interference
The phenomenon where the crest of one pulse of an app to the crest of another to produce a pulse of increased amplitude
Define destructive interference
The phenomena where the crest of one pulse overlaps with the troll of another resulting in a pulse of reduced amplitude
What is a transverse wave
This is a wave in which particles of the medium vibrate at right angles the direction of motion of the wave a transverse wave is a succession of transverse pulses
What is wavelength
The distance between two successive points in phase
a wavelength must have one trough and crest
What is frequency
The number of wave pulses per second
What is the time taken for one complete wave pulse defined as
It is defined as.
What is a crest
This is the highest point (peak) on a wave
What is what is a troll troll
Lowest point on a wave
What does it mean when points are in phase
Two points in phase are separated by a whole number multiple of complete wavelength
What does it mean when two points are out of phase
These are points that are not separated by home number multiple of complete wavelength
What is a longitudinal wave
This is a wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate parallel to the direction of motion of the wave
What is a compression
A region of high pressure in a longitudinal wave
What is a rerefaction
A region of low pressure in a longitudinal wave
How are sound waves created
Sound waves are created by vibrations in a medium in the direction of propagation
the vibration cause a regular variation in pressure in the medium
What kind of wave is a sound wave
A longitudinal wave
What are echoes
Echoes are reflections of sound waves
What is pitch
Pitch the effect produced in the ear due to the sound of a particular frequency
pitch is directly proportional to frequency
What is loudness
Loudness is a subjective term describing how strongly years perception of a sound
loudest directly proportional to amplitude
What is ultrasound
sounds with a frequency above 20,000 Hz and up to 100,000 Hz are known as ultrasound
How can an image be created using ultrasound
When a wave encounters are boundary between two Media, part of the wave is reflected, part of the wave is absorbed and part of transmitted
What are some medical benefits and uses of ultrasound
It can be used to check the location and size of a fetus in the womb ultrasound is also used to break up kidney stones so that a patient can post them ultra sound is also used to see how fast the person is blood is growing in arteries and veins
