WAVES REVISION 1 Flashcards
What is the equation for Wavespeed?
Wavespeed = Frequency * Wavelength
What is a Period? (Waves)
Time taken for one whole cycle of an oscillation (Before the motion starts to repeat itself.)
What is an Oscillation?
A regularly repeating motion about a central value/point, (ie: equilibrium line).
What is Displacement?
How far the quantity that is in oscillation has moved from its mean (rest) value at any given time.
(As in on a diagram, the maximum distance the wave (when drawn) can be from the line.)
What actually is Amplitude?
The max value of displacement (positive or negative) in the oscillation cycle, measured always from the mean (rest) position.
What’s the Crest of a wave?
The highest (most positive) point on a wave.
What’s the Trough of a wave?
The lowest (most negative) point on a wave.
What is the Phase/Rad & n of Wavelengths of 1/4 of a Cycle?

Transverse waves are…
Perpendicular to the direction of the energy of the wave.
Longitudinal waves are…
Parallel to the direction of the energy of the wave.
