Waves part 2 Flashcards
Physics
What is meant by a wavefront?
Is a section through a wave were all particles are at the same level
Give the meaning of wavelength (λ)
The distance between 2 successive crests or points (cm or m)
Give the meaning of period (T)
The time taken to complete one wave (seconds)
Formula for period
T=1÷F
Meaning of Amplitude (A)
Max. Displacement of a particle from its rest position (height) above or below the normal line (mm,cm,m)
Meaning of frequency (F)
The number of vibrations per second [number of complete wave] (hertz - hz)
Formula for frequency
Number of vibrations ÷ time taken
Meaning of velocity (v)
Speed with directions (m/s)
Meaning of Speed of a wave (c)
The distance moved by one complete wave in one second (m/s)
Formula for velocity
λ × f (wavelength × frequency)
Formula for speed of wave (c)
λ × f
Shallow
Deep waves bend away from normal
Deep
Shallow waves bend towards the normal
Nb!! For Shallow waves
Shallow waves are slower
Nb!! For deep waves
Deep waves are faster
