Waves & Optics Flashcards
Give an example of a transverse wave
Any Electromagnetic Wave- eg light, infra red, gamma rays
What is the definition of a transverse wave?
In a transverse wave the particles vibrate at 90* to the direction the wave is travelling
What is one property that all waves share?
All waves transfer energy
The definition of a longitudes wave?
In a longitudes wave the particles vibrate back and forth parallel to the direction the wave is travelling
Give an example of a longitudes wave
Sound
What is the symbol and measurement for wavelength?
Lambda and measured in metres
Hertz is measured in Hertz. What is 1 Hz?
1 wave per second
True/False- The speed of sound is greater in solids and liquids than it is in gases
True
What is the speed that all electromagnetic waves travel at?
3x10*8 m/s
True/False-Radio Waves have a greater wavelength than Visible Light
True
True/False-Microwaves have a greater frequency than Gamma Rays
False- Gamma rays have a higher frequency but a shorter wave length
What is refraction?
Refraction is the change in speed of a wave which may result in a change of direction
True/False-The Law Of Reflection- When light is reflected from a plane mirror then the angle of incidence=angle of refraction
True
True/False-In a transmitting dish the curved reflector gathers wave energy to provide a stronger signal at the recieved
False-A receiving dish gathers wave energy with the curved reflector to provide a stronger signal at the receiver
True/False-When light travels from Air to Glass the light ray bends towards the normal
True
When the light travels from glass to air the light Ray bends away from the normal
True
What is the name for the oval shaped lens?
Convex or Converging
Is a concave lens diverging or converging?
Diverging
True/False-The more powerful the lens the longer the focal length
False-The more powerful the lens the shorter the focal length
What is focal length measured in?
Metres
Would the focal length of a converging lens be positive or negative?
Positive
If person is long sighted where are the rays from near by objects focused in the eye?
Behind the retina
What lens is used to correct long sight?
Convex/Converging
True/False-Being short sighted means that the lens in your eye is not powerful enough
False-Being short sighted means the lens in your eye is too powerful
