Waves And The Earth Flashcards
What organisation searches for life
SETI Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence
What do SETI look for
Meaningful electromagnetic signals in the noise
How can we search for life in the solar system
By listening for meaningful signals
Sending out spacecraft to search on other planets and take sample to be analysed. Through telescopes
Where is it best to place telescopes
As far away from atmospheric and light pollution as these interferences cloud what the telescope can see. These places can be high on mountains or in space
Why do we use different types of telescopes
X-Ray telescopes are a good way to see violent high temperature events, radio telescopes show us microwave background radiation. Which helps use understand the universes origin. They make clearer sharper images.
How do stars form?
Stars initially form in large clouds of dust called nebula, here the gravity causes dust and particles to spiral together. Gravitational energy Is tuned into heat energy, eventually it becomes hot enough for hydrogen nuclei to fuse. Fusion continues to happen , it is in equilibrium with inward pull of gravity. When it runs out of fuel it becomes a red giant.
What happens after a star becomes a red giant
If it is a large star it will glow brightly and fuse heavier elements up to iron. Eventually it will explode into a supernova, it will either leave a neutron star or black hole. Small stars turn into planetary nebula as the outer layers float away . A white dwarf is left in the centre this will eventually become a black dwarf
