Waves Flashcards
Stationary wave
Wave pattern formed with nodes and antinodes formed when two or more progressive waves with same freq and amplitude pass through each other
Longitudinal waves
Direction of vibration of particles is parallel to the direction in which the wave travels
Transverse waves
The direction of vibration is perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels
Wavelength
Distance of one point in a wave to the respective adjacent point.
Superposition
The effect of two waves adding together when meeting
Period
Time for one complete wave
Path difference
The difference in distances from two coherent sources to an interference fringe.
Phase difference
The fraction of a cycle between the vibration of two vibrating particles.
Node
Point in a stationary wave where amplitude is 0
Frequency
Number of cycles of a wave that pass a point per second
First harmonic
Pattern of stationary wave on a string where it vibrates at lowest possible frequency
