waves Flashcards
what type of wave is a sound wave?
longitudinal wave
what wave does earthquake or explosions produce?
seismic wave
what equipment is used to detect seismic wave?
seimometer
is seismic wave longitudinal wave or transverse wave?
seismic wave is both longitudinal wave and transverse wave
examples of electromagnetic wave and what type of wave is it?
light, microwave, radio wave, are examples of electromagnetic waves, electromagnetic waves are transverse waves
what is a transverse wave?
transverse waves are waves that dont need a medium to move or travel
what is frequency?
frequency is the amount of waves passing a point in 1 second and is measured in hertz.
what wave frequency determines sound and light?
for sound it is the pitch (how high or low thw sound is) and for light it is the colour.
what is a period?
period is the amount of time that it takes for a wave to pass a given point
what is a wavelength?
wavelength is the distance of a point on a wave to another point on another wave in the same position, measured in meters
what is amplitude?
amplitude is the total distance of a wave from its rest position or rest point, and also measured in meters
what is velocity?
velocity is the speed of the wave in the direction at which its travelling
when waves passes through a medium and it changes it speed as well as the direction, what is it called?
its called refraction
what is an interface?
the surface or boundary of the two medium
what is the line at right angels to the interface called?
normal line
