Waves Flashcards
Reflection
If below critical angle, light comes out of shape, if above, TIW
EM Spectrum
Properties and uses
All can travel through vacuum and can travel at the speed of light in a vacuum.
Radio Waves-TV; Microwaves-microwave; infrared radiation-remotes; visible light-photography; UV light-sun beds; X-Rays-medical imaging; Gamma rays-cancer treatment
Refraction
Snells law
Above critical angle, no refraction
n=Sini/Sinr. Out of material, 1/n=Sini/Sinr
Types of waves
Longitudinal waves-the direction of oscillation is parallel to the direction of travel. Eg: sound, ultrasound.
Transverse waves-the direction of oscillation is at. Right angles to the direction of travel. Eg: light, waves on the surface water.
Amplitude
Symbol: A
Unit: metres
The maximum displacement of a point from its rest position as a wave passes
Wavelength
Symbol: λ
Unit: metresThe distance from any point on a wave to the equivalent point on the next wave
Period
Symbol: T
Unit: seconds
Time taken for one oscillation to pass a point.
Frequency
Symbol: f
Unit: Hertz (Hz)
The number of waves passing a point per second.
