Waves Flashcards
Font
a disturbance caused by a vibration; Waves travel away from the source that makes them.
Crest
the highest point of a wave
Trough
the lowest point of a wave
Amplitude
height or “strength” of a wave
Frequency
the number of cycles a wave completes in a period of time; the number of times something happens in a period of time
Period
a division of geologic time that is a subdivision of an era and is itself subdivided into epochs
Medium
A substance that makes possible the transfer of energy from one location to another, especially through waves
Transverse wave
a wave that occurs when the particles of a medium are displaced perpendicularly to the direction of the wave
Electromagnetic
a metal object that acts as a magnet when an electric current moves through it
Longitudinal
a wave that occurs when the particles of a medium move parallel to the direction of the wave
Compression
occurs when rocks are squeezed by external forces directed toward one another to put stress on the rock, acting to decrease its volume or shorten its dimensions
Rarefaction
area of decreased pressure following compression as a longitudinal wave propagates
Reflection
a change in the direction of a wave when it hits a barrier and bounces back
Refraction
change in direction of propagation of any wave as a result of its traveling at different speeds at different points along the wave front.
Diffraction
Diffraction is defined as a process by which light waves break up into dark and light bands or into the colors of the spectrum
