Waves Flashcards
Frequency
Wave frequency is the number of waves that pass a fixed point in a given amount of time.
Period
A time period is the time needed for one complete cycle of vibration to pass in a given point
Wavelength
equals the distance between two successive wave crests or troughs
Crest
A crest is the point on a wave with the maximum value of upward displacement within a cycle.
Trough
The Valley Of a Mechanical Wave
Medium
A Substance that allows waves to Transfer energy from one place to another
Amplitude
Maximum Distance Moved By A Vibrating Body
Longitudinal Wave
Longitudinal waves are waves in which the displacement of the medium is in the same direction as, or the opposite direction to, the direction of propagation of the wave
Electromagnetic Spectrum
Definition of electromagnetic spectrum. : the entire range of wavelengths or frequencies of electromagnetic radiation extending from gamma rays to the longest radio waves and including visible light.
Transverse Wave
A transverse wave is a moving wave that consists of oscillations that are perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave.
Compression
Compression. A compression is a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest together. Rarefaction. A rarefaction is a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart.
Rarefaction
9.2 Compression and rarefaction. A rarefaction is a region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart. As seen in Figure 9.2, there are regions where the medium is compressed and other regions where the medium is spread out in a longitudinal wave.
Reflection
Reflection is the change in direction of a wavefront at an interface between two different media so that the wavefront returns into the medium from which it originated. Common examples include the reflection of light, sound and water waves.
Refraction
Refraction, in physics, the change in direction of a wave passing from one medium to another caused by its change in speed. For example, waves in deep water travel faster than in shallow.
Diffraction
Diffraction refers to various phenomena that occur when a wave encounters an obstacle or a slit. It is defined as the bending of waves around the corners of an obstacle or aperture into the region of geometrical shadow of the obstacle.
