Waves Flashcards
Wave
A movement of particles of the medium is perpendicular to the direction of propagation of the wave
Crest
The point at which the medium reaches maximum displacement
Trough
The point of minimum displacement
Wave length
The distance between two adjacent points that are in phase
Period
Time (T) taken for one wave to pass a specific point
Frequency
The amount of waves that will pass by in 1 second
Symbol(f)
Longitudinal waves
A wave where the particles in the medium are more parallel to the direction of the movement on the wave
Compression
A region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are closest together
Rarefaction
A region in a longitudinal wave where the particles are furthest apart
Amplitude
Max displacement of particles from rest
r
Wave speed
Speed at which compression appears to move. It is equal to the product of the wavelength and frequency
