Waves Flashcards
Period (T)
Time taken for one wave to be produced
Wavelength
Distance in which a wave repeats itself
Two types of waves
- transverse
- longitudinal waves
Transverse waves
Vibrations at right angles to the direction of energy travel
Eg. Water, electromagnetic waves
Amplitude
How much energy the wave carries
Longitudinal
Vibrations are along the direction of energy travel
Eg. Sound waves, ultrasound
Frequency
Measure of how many waves are produced per second
Speed (v)
Distance travelled per second
Electromagnetic spectrum
Family of waves with many properties in common
Electromagnetic waves all
- travel at the speed of light
- travel through a vacuum
- transverse
Relationship between energy and frequency
Energy is proportional to frequency
Refraction
Change in speed experienced by a wave as it moves from one medium to another
Decrease speed
Towards normal
Wavelength decreases
Increase speed
Away from normal
Wavelength increases
All angles measured…
From the normal
