Waves Flashcards
what do waves have?
Amplitude, Wavelength and Frequency
what is the amplitude?
Amplitude is the displacement from the rest position to the crest
what is the wavelength?
The wavelength is the full cycle of the wave
what is the frequency?
The frequency is the number of complete waves passing a certain point per second
what is a transverse wave?
In transverse waves the vibrations are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer of the wave
what is a longitudinal wave?
In longitudinal waves the vibrations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer of the wave
what is the law of reflection?
Angle of Incidence = Angle of reflection
what is diffraction?
Diffraction is the spreading out of the waves as they pass through a gap or passed an obstacle
what is refraction?
Refraction is the changing of speed in a wave which affects and changes its direction
what are the seven basic EM waves (biggest to smallest)?
- Radio Waves
- Micro Waves
- Infrared
- Visible Light
- Ultra Violet
- X-Rays
- Gamma Rays
what are radio waves used for?
Communication
what are micro waves used for?
Satellite communication and Mobile phones
what are infrared waves used for?
Remote controls and Optical fibres
what is visible light used for?
Photography
how is a sound affected by frequency and amplitude?
High frequency sounds high pitched whereas low frequency is low pitched. The bigger the aptitude the louder the sound
