Waves Flashcards
Electromagnetic waves?
E.g light waves&radio waves
Can travel through a vacuum
Mechanical waves
E.g sound waves
. The aplitude of a wave?
. The wavelength?
. Amplitude is the night of wave( bigger it is the more energy it carries)
.wavelength is the distance from one crest to another
What is the unit of wavelength
The metres (M)
Reflection?
The image Seen in a mirror due to light
What is the normal
The line drawn perpendicular(90degrees)
to the reflecting surface
What is a virtual image?
Cannot be formed on a screen it isn’t the real image seen
Real image?
Is one that can be formed on a screen
What is refraction
When waves change speed they cross boundary between different substances
For example water an air and air and glass
The change in speed of the wave causes the change in direction
What is a longitudinal wave
It’s made up of compressions and rarefactions
Is a sound wave
What i diffraction
Give an example
Diffraction is a property of all waves.
It is the spreading of waves when they pass through a gap or around an obstacle.
For example would be radio and TV signals trying to get to houses over the hill if they don’t diffract enough the signal will be poor
How is sound caused
By vibrations in a substance and travel as a wave.
They cannot travel through a vaccum (space)
What causes echoes
Sound waves when reflected.
Only hard, flat surfaces reflect sound.
Soft things absorb sounds so therefore dosen’t echo
What happends to the pitch of a note as the frequency decreases?
The higher the frequency of the wave the higher the pitch of the sound.
If it decreases the pitch then gets lower
What is amplitude
The loudness of the sound depends on it. The greater the amplitude of a sound wave the more energy it carries so the louder the sound it.
