Waves Flashcards
What are the two types of waves ?
Longitudinal and transverse
What is an example of a longitudinal wave ?
Sound waves
What do all waves transfer ?
They transfer energy from one place to another .
What are transverse waves ?
Oscillation are perpendicular to the direction of energy transfer
What are longitudinal waves ?
Longitudinal waves are parallel to the direction of energy transfer
What is the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves ?
All longitudinal waves require a medium to travel in eg. air or sound .
While not all transverse waves require a medium to travel though
What is the amplitude of wave ?
The amplitude of a wave is the maximum displacement of a point of wave away from it’s undisturbed position.
What is the wavelength of a wave ?
The wavelength a wave is the distance from a point of wave to the equivalent point from an adjacent wave
What is frequency of a wave?
The frequency is the number of waves passing a point each second .
What is a unit of frequency ?
Hertz (Hz)
What is the period of wave ?
The period is the time ( in second ) for one wave to pass a point .
What is the equation for a period ?
Period = 1/ frequency (Hz)
What is wave speed ?
The speed at which a wave which move through a medium .
What is the equation that links wave speed , frequency and wavelength ?
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
What is the unit of wave speed ?
m/s
What is the unit for wavelength
m
Convert cm to m
Divide by 100
What is angle of reflection equal to ?
Angle of incidence
What is frequency range of human hearing ?
20Hz to 20kHz
1kHz = 1000Hz
How do sound waves travel though a solid ?
The particles vibrate and transfer kinetic energy through the material
What are ultra sound waves ?
Ultra sound waves are waves which have a frequency higher than upper limit of human hearing (20kHz)
Give an example use for ultrasound waves ?
Medical or industrial imaging
What natural events causes seismic waves to be producing ? What types are produced ?
Earthquakes
They produce both P-waves and S-waves
State a difference between the mediums that P-waves and S-waves can travel through ?
P-waves travels through solids and liquids
S-waves only travel through solids ( not liquids )
