Waves Flashcards
What is amplitude?
The height of a wave from rest to crest, or from rest to trough.
What is a crest?
The highest point of a wave.
What is energy?
The ability to do work. Waves carry energy from one location to another.
What is evidence?
Information that explains or supports a claim.
What is frequency?
The number of times something repeats within a fixed period, such as the number of cycles per second.
What is a pattern?
Something that is repeated over and over.
What is reflection?
The return of waves from a surface.
What is a trough?
The lowest point of a wave.
What is a wave?
A disturbance that travels through space or matter, transferring energy from one place to another.
What is wavelength?
The distance between two corresponding points on a wave.
What is electromagnetic radiation?
A form of energy that is all around us, including radio waves, visible light, and X-rays.
What is a medium?
Any substance that waves move through.
What does opaque mean?
The property of blocking out all light. Light shining on an opaque object creates a shadow.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
The range of electromagnetic radiation that is all around us, such as radio waves, visible light, and X-rays.
What is light?
The form of energy or electromagnetic radiation that makes it possible to see things.
What is the scientific inquiry process?
A process that scientists use to explore observations and answer questions.
What is the visible spectrum?
The part of the electromagnetic spectrum that people can see. It contains red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet light.
What is refraction?
The bending of rays or waves as they pass from one medium to another.
What does translucent mean?
The property of allowing some light to pass through. You cannot see completely through a translucent object.
What does transparent mean?
The property of allowing almost all light to pass through. You can see through a transparent object.
