Waves Flashcards
Wave
Medium That carries energy without net movement particles.
Frequency
the number of times a point on a wave passes a fixed reference point in one second
Medium
the substance that transfers the energy, or light from one substance to another substance or from one place to another, or from one surface to another.
Amplitude
the maximum extent of a vibration or oscillation, measured from the position of equilibrium.
Transverse Wave
motion in which all points on a wave oscillate along paths at right angles to the direction of the wave’s advance.
Reflection
the act of reflecting, as in casting back a light or heat, mirroring, or giving back or showing an image
Compressional Wave
a wave where the movement of the medium, or the vibration or disturbance within the medium, is in the same or parallel direction as that of the motion of the wave.
Refraction
the bending of a wave when it passes from one medium to another
Crests
a point on a surface wave where the displacement of the medium is at a maximum.
Diffraction
the bending of a wave around the edges of an opening or obstacle.
Troughs
a shallow dish-like vessel filled with a liquid, usually water, and used in collecting gases by displacement of liquid from a filled jar held with its open end under the surface of the liquid.
Interference
a substance, other than the assayed material, that can be measured by the chosen analytical method or that can prevent the assayed material from being measured.
Wave Length
in a wave the distance between any given point and the same point in the next wave cycle.
Resonance
a way of describing delocalized electrons
Sound waves
periodic compression and rarefaction of an elastic medium.
Water Waves
the oscillatory movements that occur on the surface of water,
Seismic Waves
vibrations in the earth that transmit energy and occur during seismic activity
Standing Wave
combination of two waves moving in opposite directions,
Eardrum
a thin membrane located in the outer ear that responds to sound waves by vibrating.
Cochlea
a fluid-filled, spiral-shaped cavity found in the inner ear that plays a vital role in the sense of hearing and participates in the process of auditory transduction
Intensity
the magnitude of a quantity per unit area.
Loudness
the property of sound which is used for differentiating between the loud and faint sounds
Decibel
a relative unit of measurement equal to one tenth of a bel.
Pitch
the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it;
