waves Flashcards
progressive wave
energy is carried from 1 point to another by means of vibration/oscillations within the wave.
transverse wave
vibrations/oscillations in the wave are perpendicular to the direction of transfer of energy of the wave.
longitudinal wave
vibrations/oscillations in the wave are parallel to direction of transfer of energy of the wave.
amplitude
maximum displacement of an oscillation from its equilibrium position.
wavelength
shortest distance between 2 points on a progressive wave which are vibrating in place.
period
time taken for a point in a wave to undergo 1 complete oscillation. it is also the time taken for a wave to travel a distance of 1 wavelength.
frequency
number of complete cycles a point in a wave undergoes per unit time.
speed
distance travelled by a wave profile per unit time.
phase difference
a measure of how much 1 wave is out of step with another. it is the fraction of a cycle between 2 points in a wave or between identical points of 2 waves. (phase difference = change d/lambda x 2pi)
intensity
the wave energy incident er unit time per unit area normal to the direction of travel of the wave. (I = P/A) (E=ka²) (I directly proportional to a²)
