waves Flashcards
wave
A wave is a disturbance that travels in a medium transferring energy and momentum from one place to another without the flow of matter
progressive waves
waves which move energy from place to place due to vibrations or oscillations without transferring matter.
egs are longitudinal waves and transverse waves
Transverse waves
Is one in which the direction of the wave is at right angle to the direction of the energy transfer.
egs electromagnetic waves
seismic s waves
waves on the surface of water
longitudinal waves
Is one in which the direction of the wave is parallel to the direction of the energy transfer.
egs sound waves
seismic p waves
compressions
compressions are that part of a longitudinal wave where
- the particles of the medium are closer than they normally are
- it is a high pressure region
- there is a momentary decrease in the volume of the medium.
rarefaction
that part of a longitudinal wave in which
- the particles of the medium are farther apart than that in normal position
-there is a momentary increase in the volume of of the medium
it is a low pressure region
crests
These are particles which are highly raised above the equilibrium position of the particles
troughs
These are particles that are greatly depressed below the equilibrium position of the particles
displacement
It is the distance moved by a point on a wave from the mean position.
amplitude
It is the max distance moved by a point on a wave from the mean position.
wavelength
It is the distance between two consecutive points in phase such as two consecutive crests or troughs
Time period
It is the time taken for any particle to undergo a complete oscillation.
