Waves Flashcards
What are longitudinal waves?
Waves where the medium oscillate in the save direction that the wave is travelling in
What are transverse waves?
Waves where the medium oscillate perpendicularly to the direction the wave is travelling in
What does frequency mean?
The number of vibration passing each second on a certain point
What does amplitude mean?
The size of the vibrations (distance between the equilibrium position and the maximum displacement)
What does wavelength mean?
The distance that it takes to comp, ece one full wave cycle
What is wave speed?
The speed that a wave propagates (moves away from its source)
What is the time period?
How long it takes to complete one full wavecycle/vibration
True or false: Sound can be heard when an object vibrates
True
What is a healthy persons’ hearing range?
20-20000 hz (hertz)
When waves are more squashed together then is the frequency (pitch) higher or lower?
Higher
What is sound measured in?
Decibels
How can we create a louder sound with air?
Increasing the amount of air particles
How does a guitar change pitch?
When sting is plucked, it vibrates
Placing fingers shortens length of string - shortens wave distance
Increases frequency so makes pitch higher
What does sound need in order to travel?
A substance to travel through with particles (NO VACUUMS)
Similarities between sound and light
Both types of waves
Can sense them
Both are made by vibrations
Both can transfer enrgy
