Waves Flashcards
Which part of the ES has the shortest wavelength and highest frequency?
Gamma
What ways can atoms be affected by absorbing EM waves?
Electrons can be moved to different distances from nucleus
Atoms becomes ionised
What causes refraction?
Changes to wave velocity
What happens when radio waves are absorbed by the wire in a circuit?
Electrons absorb waves and vibrate to produce an ac
How can radio waves be produced by a circuit?
Alternating pd causes electrons to vibrate emitting radio waves
What 2 things does the interaction of a wave with matter depend on.
Material and frequency of wave
What ways can atoms produce EM waves?
Changes in nucleus (vibrate)
Changes in the electrons distance from nucleus
What happens to wave fronts when wave travels from a less dense to a more dense medium.
They get closer
What happens when a wave interacts with matter.
Absorption
Transmission
Refraction
Reflection
What are the steps for the ripple tank practical.
Place sheet of white card underneath so waves seen easily
Pour water into tank to a depth of 5mm
Adjust rod so it’s touching water surface
Switch on electric motor and adjust its speed to produce low frequency waves
Switch on lamp and adjust its height so pattern of waves can be clearly seen
Place meter ruler at right angle to waves.
Measure across how many waves as u can and divide length by number of waves to get wavelength
Find frequency by counting number of waves passing through a point.
Describe how the water waves are produced in the ripple tank?
The bars vibrate
