Waves Flashcards
Transverse
Perpendicular to vibration
Longitudinal
Parallel to direction wave travels
Transverse waves ex
Ripples on water surface, vibrations in guitar string p, electromagnetic wave.
What does a longitudinal wave show
Compression and rare fraction
What are sound waves
Longitudinal p, travel through air
Amplitude of wave
maximum displacement of a point on a wave away from
its undisturbed position
Wavelength
is the distance from a point on one wave to the equivalent
point on the adjacent wave.
Frequency
number of waves passing a point each second.
Period equation
Period = 1/ frequency
Wave equation
Wave speed = frequency x wavelength
Difference in transverse and longitudinal
Transverse waves cause the medium to move perpendicular to the direction of the wave. Longitudinal waves cause the medium to move parallel to the direction of the wave.
