Waves Flashcards
What are waves?
Waves are a method to transfer energy, and are a moving disturbance/oscillation/vibration about a fixed point.
What do waves not transfer?
They do not transfer the material
What are longitudinal waves?
Waves in which the medium (material or matter) vibrates/oscillates in the same direction the wave travels in.
What are transverse waves?
Waves in which the medium vibrates/oscillates perpendicular to the direction the wave travels in.
What are some examples of a longitudinal wave?
Sound, P – seismic,
Pressure, Shock, slinky
What are some examples of a transverse wave?
Light, Water, S – seismic, slinky, rope, Electromagnetic radiation (Radio, Micro, IR, visible light, UV, X, Gamma)
What is the frequency?
The number of vibrations passing each second.
What is the amplitude?
The size of the vibrations. Distance between the equilibrium position and the maximum displacement
What is the wavelength?
Distance over which 1 complete
vibration/oscillation/wave cycle happens
What is the wavespeed?
The speed that a wave propogates
