Waves Flashcards
Progressive Wave
A wave in which the medium is displaced in the same line as the direction of energy transfer
Displacement
The distance from the equilibrium position
Amplitude
The maximum displacement from the equilibrium position
Wavelength
The minimum distance between two points oscillating in place
(Time) Period
The time taken by a complete cycle of the wave to pass a point
Frequency
The number of wavelengths passing a given point per unit time
Speed of Wave
The distance travelled by the wave per unit time
Diffraction
The spreading out of waves when they pass an obstruction. This obstruction is typically a narrow slit (an aperture)
Reflection
When light “bounces” off a material which is different to the one in which it is travelling
Refraction
The change of direction of wave that occurs when it’s speed changes, this is due to a change in optical densities that the wave travels in m
