Waves Flashcards
What do waves transfer?
waves transfer energy and information but no not transfer matter
What is the period?
The length of time it takes one wave to pass a given point
What is the wavelength?
the distance from one point on one wave took a point in the same position on the next wave, measured in metres.
what is the amplitude?
The maximum distance of a point on the wave away from its rest position, measured in metres. The greater the amplitude of a sound wave, the louder the sound
what is the velocity?
the speed of the wave in the direction it is traveling. Waves travel at different speeds in different materials.
differences between longitudinal and transverse waves
In a transverse wave, particles of the medium vibrate up and down perpendicular to the direction of the wave.In a longitudinal wave, particles of the medium vibrate back and forth parallel to the direction of the wave
Examples of transverse waves
Ripples on the surface of water
Examples of longitudinal waves
Sound waves, seismic waves, P waves, ultrasound waves
What is the equation relating wave speed, frequency and wavelength?
Wave speed= frequency x wavelength (v=f x λ)
what is the equation relating wave speed distance and time?
speed= distance/time (v=x/t)
how can you measure the velocity of sound in the air?
timing how long it takes for the sound waves to travel a known distance through a medium
How can you measure the velocity of waves on the surface of water?
