Waves Flashcards
what are the two types of waves and what are they?
Transverse waves= Ripples on the surface of water
Longitudinal waves=Sound waves travelling in air
what is waves?
Waves transfer energy from one place to another
What type of energy does transverse and longitudinal waves transfer?
Ripples-transfer kinetic energy
Sound-transfer sound energy
what is oscillations?
The process of moving back and forth regularly
what are the oscillations for transverse and longitudinal waves?
In transverse waves oscillations are perpendicular (90) to the direction of energy transfer
Most waves are transverse including:
1)Electromagnetic waves
2)Ripples and waves in water
3)A wave on a string
In longitudinal waves the oscillations are parallel to the direction of energy transfer eg sound waves
what is wave speed and what is the equation?
Wave speed is the speed at which energy is being transferred
Equation Frequency times wavelength
V=f × λ
V= wavespeed m/s
F=frequency (hz)
λ=wavelength (m)
what is one important fact about waves?
For both ripples on a water surface and sound waves in the air it is the wave that travels and not the water or the air
what is the amplitude on a wave?
what is the wavelength of a wave?
The amplitude of wave is the maximum displacement of a point on a wave away from it’s undisturbed position
The wavelength of a wave is the distance from a point on one wave to the equivalent point on the adjacent wave
How do you work out the wavelength of a wave?
what is the symbol a wave?
You can measure the top of the wave (between),middle part and the bottom part
Symbol- λ is called lambda
what is frequency?
what is the unit?
how do you work it out?
The number waves passing a point each second
Unit is hz=hertz
1 hz= 1 wave per second
Count the number of waves there are (between)
what is a period?
what is the unit?
what is the equation?
Period is the time (in seconds) for one wave to pass a point
Unit is seconds
Equation is 1/frequency hz
