Waves Flashcards
What is a transverse wave?
A wave where the movement of particles is perpendicular to the propogation of energy
What is a longitudinal wave?
A wave where the movement of particles is parallel to the propogation of energy
What is amplitude?
Maximum displacement of the wave from its rest position
What is wavelength?
The distance between 2 successive crests/troughs (represented as λ)
What is period?
The time taken for the wave to make one complete cycle
What is frequency?
Number of complete cycles a wave makes in one second (in Hz)
Formula for frequency?
f = 1/T
Formula for speed of wave?
v = fλ
What can you deduce from a snapshot graph?
Amplitude and wavelength
What can you deduce from a history graph?
Amplitude and period (which can be used to calculate frequency)
True or False?
The history and snapshot graphs for a longitudinal wave look like a transverse wave.
True
Where do water waves travel faster in?
The frquency of the water wave is constant
Deeper water
Distance between succesive crests is larger so wavelength is greater
Where are the particles fastest in a wave?
At the equilibrium position
